Tribal Health Care
We as Curyugmiut are the survivors of the survivors - Many of us descend from the orphans of the 1919 flu pandemic which were brought to the hospital at Kanakanak from the near shores and far reaches of the Bristol Bay region. Over 100 years later, Kanakanak Hospital is still providing health care services in our tribal community.
For the last 50 years our Tribe has exercised self-governance in health care. Working with our neighbors collectively we established the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation which was the first time an Alaska tribal coalition contracted with the Indian Health Service to provide health care services to Alaska Native patients.
Stories in this category will focus on the health of ourselves, our families and communities as well as the advocacy our Tribe has engaged in to assure self-governance in tribal health care.Subsistence | Education | Native Justice | Culture | Tribal Health Care | Family History
